random thoughts for Thursday

1. Last Saturday, I went to a diamond wedding party at my church; the actual anniversary is today. Sixty years! Joan and Haddon are the dearest, sweetest old couple imaginable; huge congratulations to them. Rather touchingly, their best man from 60 years ago - who has been Haddon's best friend since they were in primary school together in the '30s - is still their best friend today, and was there to make a speech at the party! It was really touching. That kind of lifelong friendship is something most of us can only dream of these days, living in such a fast-paced and ever-changing world where no one ever seems to stay put for long.

2. The Ryder Cup is about to begin, apparently. This is something that would normally pass me by completely, but it has been rather forced upon my attention of late because of being staged locally for the first time. The actual event is being held at the Celtic Manor Resort, which is over on the other side of Newport, the next city along the coast, but here in Cardiff we are apparently seeing a lot of overspill. We are also hosting a lot of the events associated with the tournament, including whatever was going on in the city centre last night - a banquet at the Castle followed by a concert at the Millennium Stadium, I believe. I'm sure both were fabulous, for attendees, at least. From my point of view, battling to get through town to go home, they were little more than a nuisance!

3. It's Fresher's Week! This means that all of a sudden we are positively swimming in students. Pray God the network holds out, since we're still running without resilience currently.

4. The house next door has been sold and put up to let. If they ever manage to find any tenants, I'll have to keep an eye out to see what the new neighbours are like.

5. It has gone horribly cold and wet this week. Last week was the last hurrah for summer and it really is autumn now, it seems. My cats are most put out by the change in the weather and keep complaining to me about it!

6. In work, my team has taken over facilities management for our building. So far, I have learned far more than I ever wanted to about keys. And furniture disposal. It's gonna be downhill from here...

Aww at the Diamond anniversary couple. My Great Aunt & Uncle will reach that milestone in 16 months time.

I know what you mean about friendship - I've been friends with my best mate I suppose officially since we were in nursery school some 36 years ago now. I've just about lost contact with all my other school friends apart from her.

We're about a week ahead of you in that Freshers was last week even though the PGDE had been in by 4 weeks at that point!

Congrats to your great-aunt and uncle, then, as well - I'm so impressed at the thought of it.

I don't really keep in touch with anyone from school any more - I only have contact with a handful, and even those it is the barest of contact, mostly just facebook. It is so easy to let things drift.

Enrolment has been in full swing for a while now, but Fresher's only happened this week - it's later than usual this year, but I'm not sure why. I should know, since I sit on the Enrolment Review Group, but the reason passed me by completely! The group has been rather more focused on our recent technical difficulties...

Wow, congrats to the diamond anniversary couple! That's so sweet.

Does sound like fun if you're not battling the crowds. Same goes for having all the students around.

Poor ickle cold cats. Would like to know where the warm weather has gone, it's not exactly warm here either. Must still on the way.

Fingers crossed you have nice new neighbours!

Sixty years of marriage is so impressive. I'm boggled at the thought of it.

The warm weather must be somewhere. Who on earth might have stolen it? And how can we get it back!

It is amazing! Not many marriages can go that much of the distance anymore.

Maybe the carribean? We need to go and get it back, right now!

I'm not a great fan of golf, but my Proud Mother mode is kicking in for the Ryder Cup - or at least for something connected to it. 15 yr old Thomas sings with Only Boys Aloud, and he came home Wednesday night absolutely buzzing after the inaugural concert. He sang for HRH the Prince of Wales; he shared a stage (or something) with Catherine Zeta Jones and Katherine Jenkins. So YAY! for the Ryder Cup, even though I really couldn't give two hoots what happens next in it.

I'll be cursing it soon enough, I daresay: I may be attending a funeral in Newport soon, and the place is likely to be overflowing with irritating golfpeeps.

Ah, so your lad is part of the reason my journey through town took three times as long as usual on Wednesday! *shakes fist*

Oh, but how fabulous for him - what an amazing experience that must have been!

And now...I hope the golfers and their audience are all enjoying this lovely torrential rain we're having this morning...

Oh, so do I! Croeso i Gymru! Welcome to Wales! And a very warm welcome to anyone for whom 'home' is colder, wetter, greyer and generally more miserable than it is here today. The rest of you can go hang. And please remember that us normal people who live here all the time are trying to carry on with our lives - and you visitors, though undoubtedly lovely people, are making it very difficult for us.

I wonder whether Newport, Chepstow and Cardiff will make any real money out of the Ryder Cup circus? I can't help but feel that so much has been spent on it so far that any actual profit is likely to be somewhat small.

I'm still hung up on wondering who thought it would be a good idea to have major roadworks going on right in the centre of Cardiff at the same time that we are expecting an increase in tourists coming for the golf!

More than that, I'm wondering who was the genius who looked at the traffic congestion in Cardiff city centre and thought to himself, 'okay, so if there are several roads that all get gummed up at busy times, obviously if we reduce both the number of roads and the lanes available in those that are left, that will solve the problem'! I mean, surely any blind fool could see that concentrating the same amount of traffic into an ever-decreasing number of roads/lanes would only make matters worse...

But who am I to judge decisions made by the Highways Dept? I'm only a service-user, after all - what do I know? *le sigh*

Okay, rant over! LOL
