I took Macavity the Mystery Cat to the vet this morning - something of an achievement, I feel! He seems to have forgiven me already, as well, which is a relief - I wasn't sure he would.
I'd been tending the abscess on his head for a couple of days, but it was still looking pretty nasty, and then this morning a second scab came off revealing another massive puncture right alongside the first, with lots of icky gummy pus oozing out of it.

I was worried, so I rang the vet for advice and they said they would really like to see him, if I could get him there. So I called my dad, who helped me get him in the cat box - which was a bit of an ordeal, although he was ever so good about not scratching or biting even as he protested and struggled - and then gave us a lift to the surgery. Macavity was as good as gold at the vet, let them weigh him and irrigate the wounds and give him antibiotic and painkilling injections...although then panicked over having to go back in the box. The vet also gave me a bottle of hibiscrub for bathing the wound, which will work better than plain warm water while being gentler than salt water. Best of all, because he is a stray, the RSPCA paid the bill!
Ideally, the vet would like me to take him back when he is better for blood tests (because he is at risk of nasty things like feline aids) and to be neutered, but I'm not sure what my chances are of achieving that. I only managed to get him there this time because he is poorly! Still, although he ran off when I brought him home, he is back in again now as if nothing happened, so he can't be too traumatised by the experience - a little more wary than he was this morning, but the trust is clearly still there. I think deep down he quite enjoyed being picked up and cuddled, at the very least!

I was dead impressed that the RSPCA agreed to pay for his treatment. I just assumed I'd have to fork out for it, as the person taking him in, and even when they said they were phoning the RSPCA about him I didn't think I'd get more than a contribution toward the cost, but instead they paid for the lot!

And many kudos for the RSPCA for footing the bill. That's really good to know.

I'm impressed that the RSPCA payed the bill too--wow! Good on them.
I'm glad he's continuing to trust you, and I hope he feels better soon.

And it's great to hear that the RSPCA paid for the treatment, I think that's great.
Hope McCavity continues to improve!

I'm glad that he doesn't resent you for taking to him the vet. As traumatizing as the vet can be, maybe he is feeling better because of it and is grateful you took care of him. *hugs*
