things that have happened this week

1. Went to use the vaccuum cleaner, only to discover a great big hole in the tube. Am very displeased - I only just forked out for a new pack of bags for the wretched thing! Have patched it up temporarily, but sooner or later will have to bite the bullet and stump up for a new one. How annoying.

2. Looks like this temp gig is not going to last much longer, which seems rather a waste of all the time and effort the company put into training us. Turns out, there just isn't the volume of work they had anticipated. Also, despite knowing that they were hiring and training temps specifically for this purpose, they let the permanent staff take stacks and stacks of overtime to clear the backlog, so that by the time we actually started work there was barely any left to do! It probably doesn't help that the department is in the middle of a major re-structuring at the moment. Madness. I never expected or intended this to be more than a very short-term gig, but still. This is also rather annoying. Fingers crossed for the many applications I have in at the moment, and especially for the interviews I have lined up.

3. I seem to have lost my recapping mojo. My brain is fried. Normal service will be resumed as soon as I have located a replacement...

4. Banging hard on the ceiling or wall with a broom handle works beautifully as a means of shutting up noisy neighbours, both Him Upstairs and Them Next Door (not the Naked Neighbours, the other side). However, having to get out of a nice warm bed in order to do so is very annoying.

5. It is rather difficult to type with a cat curled up in your lap clinging desperately to the arm she wants to use as a pillow and giving you manipulative adoration eyes that she knows are irresistible. Once of these days I will spam you all with Poppy pics by way of illustration.

6. It is nearly Christmas. This is rather scary, since a) I'm not the slightest bit prepared, b) I have no money, and c) I'm not entirely sure where the year went. This has not been a good year. I would say I am hopeful of better things next year, but I said the same thing last year and it turned out to be a disaster! So instead I shall just focus on appreciating the moment. Perhaps I should also write a few Christmas cards, since the Scout post closes soon. Also, the arrival of the Christmas Craft Fair in the city centre always cheers me up, no matter how inconceivable it is that Christmas can possibly be that close. And the lights in town are very pretty.

7. Why are there so many cameras around town? I can't seem to move without falling over cameramen, sometimes with accompanying sound engineer, sometimes alone, usually filming completely randomly - stock shots of some kind, for something or other, perhaps? Strange.

2. Hope it lasts long enough for something better to turn up! Temp work is not nice, no security in it at all.

7. You're actually in a sort of Truman Show reality TV programme. It's on a channel you can't get, but we have all been watching you go about your daily business for months now.

Hee. Damn. I'd better stop being such a slob, then!

Looking forward to being 'spammed' with Poppy pics :)

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
One of these days I will get around to uploading from the camera!

[identity profile] catsdownunder.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Since my computer's last trip to the doctor, when I upload my pics they are 'deleted' from the camera ... don't know why it has changed. Must sort mine out too. Had a wonderful moment last night when both girls were eating near each other and wanted Dood to pass the camera over ... but ... wrong timing ... news was on so a rare moment was lost.

It has been a year, all right, for so many many people. And man, it has gone so fast my head is done in. Of course, my head's done in right now for a lot of reasons.

I send you good thoughts. Especially if you're at the mercy of stupid people. There is little more distressing in this life than being at the mercy of stupid people.

Do spam. Poppy sounds adorable.

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, 2008 has not been a good year, all around. Let us hope for better things from 2009.

It's been ages since I've Poppy-spammed - I was just clicking through my Poppy tag to see when I last posted pics. I must get new pics uploaded.

[identity profile] babelmira.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you bang on your ceiling? You'll only put dents in it and the neighbours will just get noisier.

Bad luck on the temp gig.

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
No, no - Him Upstairs responded beautifully to the bang. He is on a warning from the landlord!

[identity profile] femsc.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Gaffer tape.
2. They're in a very poor position for refusing you leave to attend interviews in that case.
4. Get a longer broom... Actually, get two broom handles, gaffer tape them together, keep on floor beside bed.
5. *g*
6. It's not my favourite celebration, because it seems so completely meaningless these days. It's not a good Christian festival; it's not a good pagan festival. It seems to be more and more a case of paying homage to the gods of gluttony, avarice and money. I'm hoping that this 'ere 'credit crunch' (sounds like a choccy bar or a breakfast cereal) will bring people to their senses.
7. Dunno. Are they filming an episode of Dr Who, or Torchwood perhaps? Or is the 6 o'Clock News so stuck for anything to report that they're using the lack of people spending oodles of dosh which in their case they have not got?

[identity profile] femsc.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Forgot to say - I completely agree with you re the Craft Fair. I hope the purveyor of hot Gluhwein is back - last year seemed very cold without him there.

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I always start feeling festive when the Craft Fair appears, marking the six weeks to go point.

It is the pancakes I tend to find hard to resist - no matter how much I remind myself of just how many batches of homemade pancakes I could produce for the same price!

[identity profile] femsc.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, pancakes. Banananana ones. And this year I shall try to remember to take babywipes with me, to mop up the sugar etc after I've finished :)

Ooh, and all those lovely cheese, fudge, choccy, local wine etc stalls that have free samples sitting there calling my name...

I feel a trip to town coming on :)

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Yes, Stickiness is the inevitable downside. But so worth it.

Free samples are a wonderful invention. At bigger events especially - at the Royal Welsh, all it takes is a couple of swings around the food tent and you've had an entire meal's worth!

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
1. Yes. Nuisance.
2. It was only the first week I couldn't get time off, while the training was intense. I did miss two interviews that week, though. I have others lined up, though, so fingers crossed.
6. Christmas is usually a good time in our family. It is meaningful for us, as we are Christians - the date might have been chosen arbitrarily, but we still find meaning in it. It is a time when we come together, enjoy one another's company, give gifts, but don't over-indulge. It just feels...disjointed this year, probably because there's so much other stuff going on.
7. Some of the camera I've seen have been really weird. Yesterday there was a cameraman and sound engineer standing at a large junction randomly filming traffic - for a news item, perhaps? The other day the cameraman was holding his camera down at ground level as he walked - filming peoples' feet, for some reason? Other times I'll see people being interviewed in the street, presumably for those little public opinion soundbytes you sometimes get on the news. It just all seems so random - and so frequent. Mad.

[identity profile] bogwitch.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They sound like a bunch of disorganised idiots, sucks for you though.

Sounds like the time when I worked for Ford and they put a ban on temps, seemingly not realising they were keeping the place together. Needless to say, no one was got rid of and nothing changed. You have to wonder about management sometimes.

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Aye, I suppose it's the trouble with big companies - the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!

[identity profile] kelzies.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope you're able to find something soon to replace the temp work! It sucks how there's no security in it.

Hope you're able to replace your mushed brain too.

They sure do a lot of filming near where you live!

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there used to be more hours available in a day than there are now...

I really hope something permanent will come along soon, as well - but I've been hoping that for months now. Stupid economic crisis.

They really do seem to do a lot of filming around here - and most of it seems completely and utterly random!

[identity profile] wildcard-sej.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
1) If you can identify the model, it might be worth looking on eBay to see if you can get just the tube. It's amazing that they even bother, but it seems plenty of people will put the working (or even non-working) parts of something for sale online, and you might just get lucky.

2) That really sucks. Left hand, meet right hand. Argh!

Got my fingers crossed for you though. And add that training to your resume anyway.

3) No worries, it's hiatus season now.

5) Picspam please! ;)

6) I've given up on Christmas - haven't bothered (except for the kids) since 1999. Too much commercialised greed and hype and nobody bothers to show any appreciation anyway. Bah humbug!

7) Dunno, but ask if there's any work going?

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
1. Ooh, good thinking. I might try that.

2. Stupid company. I'm still glad I took the gig, though. Even if it does end sooner rather than later, it has pulled me out of the funk I was in. The training has been good, the experience has been good, and it's been good to get out and about interacting with new people and having something constructive to do.

3. Hiatus is a blessing, this time around! Gives me time to re-wire the brain.

5. Must get around to uploading the pics. I wish I could get a really good shot of her 'I'm an adorable treasure and that's why you love me' face. That one really is irresistible.

6. Christmas is usually really good in my family. This year, though, there's too much else going on. And the weeks are speeding by way too fast!

7. I can just see me swinging a camera around! I'm fairly certain, however, I could stand around holding the sound boom. How much d'you reckon they'd pay for that?

[identity profile] ehlwyen.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I'm thinking of you! I hope the holidays go better than they look right now.

btw, I agree buying new vacuum bags is the kiss of death for them. *rolleyes*

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Lyn.

Stupid vaccuum cleaner. It isn't as if I even use it all that often...but sometimes the cat knocks plant pots off the shelf and I really do have no choice! Finding the wretched thing broken wasn't quite in the game plan, there!

[identity profile] ehlwyen.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to vacuum all the time since one of my cats is SO FURRY! If I brush him, the fluff I pull off is usually the size of a small cat. LOL!

It's the little things that make it feel like something is conspiring against us. Hopefully the patch will hold. *hearts*

Look forward to Poppy pics!

[identity profile] francy-m79.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have experience with cats blocking my movements!! haha, Poppy is adorable!!! :D

I'm sorry it has been a bit of a shitty year, hon...hope the next will be better, for both of us! *hug*

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Morning, Francy! *hug*

I will post Poppy pics soon. Must upload.

This has been a lousy year for so many people. Let us all keep our fingers crossed for next year!
