rest in peace

My little Calico cat is gone.

Chelsea phoned me in work at lunchtime, in tears, to say there was something wrong, so I took the afternoon off and went straight there. She'd been fine this morning - jumping up into and out of the sink - but came home at lunchtime in distress and barely able to move. We think she must have had a fall and broke her leg, one of the hind legs that were weak and arthritic already. By the time I got there she was perfectly calm, so the initial distress seems to have been shock and probably the trauma of trying to get home, rather than pain.

She was completely content, as usual, and totally alert, as usual. She just couldn't stand.

Dad came and we took her to the vets. She wouldn't go in the box, so I held her on my lap in the car, which she thought was marvellous - wouldn't lie down, because she wanted to see out of the window! At the vets, she curled her paws around my neck and cwtched in close, but was immediately the centre of attention from everyone else in the waiting room, which, again, she thought was marvellous.

But our initial fears were confirmed. She'd broken her leg, and at her age there was just no way it was going to heal. The treatment would be too distressing for her, and she already had a weak heart. So there was nothing to do but let her go peacefully. One injection to put her to sleep and another to stop her heart, and that was it. She cwtched up, rested her head on my arm, and then she was gone.

We took her home and buried her in the back garden. We'll go to the garden centre on Sunday and buy a little tree to plant over the grave. And then that's that.

I've had that cat since I was twelve years old. I'm just so glad I had that long weekend with her, just the two of us (and Chess). I had a feeling then that I needed to make the most of every moment, and it turns out that instinct was absolutely right.

Oh sweetheart, I'm so very sorry :( *hugs* I went through something similar with our cat a few years ago, who had been with us for nearly 20 years, and it's a horrible time. But I hope, like I did, you can take some comfort in the fact that she must have had a wonderful life with you for all those years, and that in the end she didn't suffer. I'm here if you need anything. *more hugs*

I'm so sorry Jo.

She was a beautiful cat and sounds like she had the most wonderful nature. It sounds like she had a great life, and a long one too, but it's always too short with an animal that lovely.

I'm sure you'll get a nice plant for her. It's great that you managed to spend a lot of time with her towards the end.

Oh, I am really sorry, hon! *hugs* Such a beautiful cat and I am going to miss hearing stories about her adventures .. like jumping into showers. :)

Good that you could be there with her til the end! *hugs*

Oh Jo! I'm so sorry, she was such a beautiful cat, and we'll miss her too. Glad you had this last weekend with her and were able to share your pics and memories of her. {{hugs}}

I'm so very sorry that this time you had been dreading has come so quickly. When I was reading your post about your long weekend with Calico, I had a funny feeling that you were saying your private farewells to each other.
There is a strange comfort in being there with them at the end, for me at least. It is such a kind end, so quick and peaceful.
Poor Small, too, it must have been quite traumatic for her to see Calico injured.
Will be thinking about you - take care of yourself.

Awwwwww, hugs. My mum lost her 18 year old last year, but like you he has a spot in the garden (all the cats have their markers). It's hard to see them go, especially when they've been around so long and been such a big part of your life.

I type with tears rolling down my face ... oh Jo ... the Easter weekend you spent with her ... the shower you shared with her ... such wonderful memories to add to those you already own.

Hugs.

I'm sorry to hear that Jo *hugs* :( Such a cute cat.

I'm so sorry. It's always upsetting when a family pet dies, especially one you've had for such a long time. At least you had the chance to say goodbye to her and she knew she was loved.

My Gizmo, see icon, was 18 when she dissappeared, never to be seen again. I was upset about that because she had such a sweet nature as well.

I'm sorry for your loss hon *hugs*
She was such a beautiful cat.

Aww, Jo *hugs*

It's always hard, especially when a pet's been in the family for that long.

So sorry for your loss Jo. I've felt that pain a few too many times myself.

Letting go graciously

Calico cats seem to be a special _type_ of critter, and it's not just the colouring that marks them. The ones I've known, or known about, have seemed more 'aware' somehow, more psychic (perhaps) and able to tune into human feelings. I know you and your family will miss her deeply, but if Small needs to talk to her about Life and such, she can go sit by Calico's tree and know her spirit is there to listen. Hugs and rockabyes for your sorrow, too....

Ohh. It's so sad to lose a pet. A great many animals have come and gone in my life, and I'm not as miserable about losing them as in the past, but the longer-lasting the pet, the worse it can be.

*hugs* Sorry to hear about your cat. :(

But it sounds like she lived a long and good life. I can't believe you had her since 12!

I am so sorry to hear about poor Calico. Must have been a traumatic experience for Small too.
Thank goodness you got to spend a lovely long weekend with Calico on your own.
A beautiful memory to fall back on. And what a lovely, cuddly cat she looked to be.

Big hugs, Jo. It is just so hard to lose a pet, really one of the family. Some people don't understand, but it looks as though you have lots of animal lovers as friends and we do know what you are going through.

I am so sorry Jo. Losing pets is awful. :( Huge hugs to you.

I'm sorry, Jo. :( But she had a long and happy cat-life and got to leave peacefully. Sleep well, Calico.

I do understand how you feel, it's awful, terrible and it frighten me to think of this moment for our little baby cats...

All my support, love & whatever will please you <3 ! Sorry again...

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat, Jo, it must be so hard to lose her after 18 years. :( May she rest in peace.

OMG *cries with Jo*

Losing your cat is so sad and painful. Thankfully you had just spend the weekend with her, and had had a chance for some quality time.
I'm so sorry she had to be put down, but glad that you were with her when it happened. I still feel the loss of my cat who died august 2005, I guess you just keep them in your heart forever. *hugs Jo tight*
