Acorn Syndrome snippet

A Pros drabble. Well, almost a drabble. Well, a drabble and a bit, then. Someone over at Prosfanfic wondered why a pair of highly trained CI5 agents would be sent to collect a desk - reward or punishment - and between that and an ongoing discussion about ways of writing dialogue without resorting to 'he said', this scene suggested itself to me. This is what happened right before The Acorn Syndrome.

"Have you heard what the Cow wants us to do now?" Bodie flung himself onto a chair with a disgruntled sigh.

Doyle glanced up from his newspaper. "What?"

"You haven't heard?"

"Heard what?"

"Cowley," Bodie grumbled. "Wants us to pick up his new desk."

Doyle frowned. "When?"

"Give you three guesses."

Doyle groaned and shook his head. "Not tomorrow? It's our day off!"

"Not any more, it's not."

"Why us?"

"Ask him yourself."

"The McKinley case? Is he still banging on about that?"

"At length."

"Oh, that's typical, that is." Doyle scowled. "I had plans for tomorrow!"

"You and me both, mate. Still, it won't take long, will it – get there early, drop it off back at HQ, job done and the rest of the day is still ours…"

...

...and then The Acorn Syndrome happened: quiet little desk collection job followed by high speed chase, siege, fast and frantic investigation, slogging search through the countryside, shoot outs...
