So, the back to work blues are kicking in - first day comes as a bit of a shock to the system after two weeks off! So to compensate, I'm going to indulge myself in a bit of nostalgia for what I got up to on my holidays. Which was not a lot, overall, since it was more of a laze around relaxing at home type holiday, but last Friday I went with a group of miscellaneous family members to the new Doctor Who Experience, which opened last month about three miles down the road in Cardiff Bay. It poured down with rain, so we were all a bit on the soggy side by the time we got there, but such is the Great British Summer. I've been to Doctor Who exhibitions before, but what the heck, this is a new collection so I'm going to picspam the hell out of it anyway. *G*

First off, it absolutely kills me that my hometown now has street signs with Daleks on them. Who'd have imagined, ten years ago, that that would ever happen?

"It's like The Monkees suddenly did an episode set in Vietnam."

Hee. I love that description of the Torchwood mini series, Children of Earth, as blogged by Who writer Paul Cornell in his review of 2009. And I also love his more serious thoughts on the show.

In other news, I wandered into the Borders closing down sale at lunchtime and came out with three books tucked under my arm. I knew it was dangerous to go in there! I was seduced by the 50% off.

Took Small and Mum down to the Bay yesterday for a walk along the new coastal path that's opened allowing you to walk all the way around to the Barrage. 'Twas the most gorgeous summer's day imaginable - clear and sunny yet not too hot, absolutely perfect - so the sea locks were really busy, letting a constant stream of boats in and out. As usual, I could have stood and watched them all day! Mum was all full of reminiscences, because she lived down there as a child and the grandfather she lived with worked on the dry docks. It all looks so different now, she really struggled to get her bearings and locate the old landmarks she knew from back then.

While we were there, I couldn't help noticing Torchwood, Children of Earth spoilers behind cut )

This is how gorgeous the Bay looked yesterday.

Now, I never did post pictures of [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb and [livejournal.com profile] nikkimisplaced's visit the other week, being lazy and disorganised of late. But Chris has posted a picspam now, so I don't have to - see here all the places we went, at least the ones we took pictures of. Go take a look.

On my way into work this morning I passed a bunch of rather summery-looking men wearing brightly coloured blazers (with buttonholes, no less) and straw boaters. Wahey, the Ashes, huh. LOL

Torchwood, Day Four )

In other news, I clicked on [livejournal.com profile] marishna's link to her cap-and-picspam post only, to my horror, to be immediately confronted by spoilers for the Harper's Island finale, which she has somehow already seen and discussed in the same post. Horrors! I closed my eyes quick. Not quick enough, alas, but I'm trying to forget what I read. I want to enjoy those final two episodes unspoiled, thanks all the same!

Have had a letter from the dental hospital telling me I have an appointment in August to discuss pulling out my impacted wisdom tooth. Fun!

Also received a cheque for £450 from my old landlord - return of my bond, and slightly more than I thought it would be! Also pretty prompt. Very nice.

I think a random cat got into the house last night, what with the catflap being unlocked and all. Poppy woke me up in the we sma's growling, so I got up to see what the problem was and heard the catflap going downstairs as whoever it was scarpered. Great. That's all I need. Poppy has already decided that the catflap is Public Enemy Number One. She'll come in through it if she's out, but won't go out through it in the first place, at least not by herself. She wants me to open the door for her. Sometimes she'll go through it if I hold it open, but other times she just stares at me in dismay, backs away, and then runs upstairs as fast as she can! Still, using it to come in is the most important thing – means I can let her out and then not have to worry about getting her back in again.

Small steps, eh.

Taking a short break from Real Life to note that the trailer for the forthcoming Torchwood mini-series actually looks pretty good (aside from my usual irritation with Eve Myles, among others, overdoing the melodrama). I really hope the actual episodes live up to the advert!

In SN news, my outstanding recaps for the end of season 4 remain outstanding and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, I'm afraid.

Now, I don't usually talk about other peoples' convention experiences, just read about 'em silently, and I haven't browsed all that many of the reports and videos from last weekend's Asylum convention in Birmingham, partly because most of the early ones that went up really irritated me, and also I'm still feeling pretty disaffected from fandom in general. But then [livejournal.com profile] ze_pink_lady posted some vids of Jensen's coffee lounge over at Super-Wiki, and I kind of fell in love with this one clip where Jensen is talking about the dog he got via his girlfriend, a cockapoo called Icarus. The way he describes her excitement and his exasperated reaction is adorably hilarious, and then he has to admit that he fell in love with the little bundle of fluff, despite how unmanly it is, and starts showing off the dog's picture on his phone and doing his impression of Jared's (big, manly) dogs reacting to this little stuffed toy, and it is just too cute for words! So I have to share, just for those folk who might not have seen it.

Okay, now returning to my break from fandom, in which almost every square inch of floor space in my flat is now awash with boxes...

New Who tonight! Yay!

My little cat has finally figured out what the lap is for. However, she is only interested in sitting there when I am dripping wet, wrapped in a towel, trying to get dried and dressed of a morning. Just shoves herself on, all I WANT LOVE, GIVE ME CUDDLES, DAMMIT! And won't take no for an answer. There's nowt so stubborn as a cat!
