llywela: The Professionals (Pros1)
Sue! A long time ago I promised I would attempt to complete the set of Pros banners I'd once upon a time started making to accompany episode reviews.

No, I haven't actually finished this project, that's going to take a while longer, but I have made a few, with varying degrees of success, so I thought I'd post a first batch to be going on with, just so you know I haven't forgotten. They aren't wonderful, since a) I'd forgotten everything I ever knew about PS, and b) screencaps from a 40-year-old show don't exactly lend themselves to decent art, but I've given it a go!

Okay, so this question passed across my dash on Tumblr the other day: We have 2 modern retellings of Sherlock Holmes (tv shows). Why not The Three Musketeers?? I'm sure it can be done! (As it has been done in fan fiction A LOT.) Let's plot!! :D What would be your version of The Three Musketeers in modern time? Elite police task force? Undercover agents (this is my fav)? Or just a group of misfits? TELL ME!

And it got me thinking. What kind of show would that story be, if re-told in a modern setting?

And...I know Sue probably won't agree, but the inescapable conclusion I came to was: The Professionals! The Musketeers in a modern setting would totally be The Professionals, of course it would. I mean, think about it: slightly maverick law enforcement department whose brief is much wider than that of the police, a body of elite special agents recruited as the best of the best, dealing with anything and everything from spies to terrorists to protection details, and using sometimes unorthodox methods to fight fire with fire. Gruff departmental controller who must navigate the murky world of political intrigue in order to do his job. Devoted brotherhood of agents putting their lives on the line daily and willing to do just about anything for one another. Action-packed show full of banter, drama, humour and emotion. The parallels are all there!

No wonder I love both shows so much. :D

This behind-the-scenes pic is what they'd look like as modern-type agents:

The AU practically writes itself! (But don't worry, I'm not gonna!)

Lewis Collins has died.

I am very sad. :(

ETA: A nice little tribute from Martin Shaw - "I was very sad to hear today that Lewis has died. We spent a very tough four years together in making The Professionals, and shared in the production of what has become an icon of British television. He will be remembered as part of the childhood of so many people, and mourned by his fans. I send my love and condolences to his family, and the great many who will miss him."

It's been an age since I did one of these, so here's an episode review for The Professionals.

Weekend in the Country

Overview

So, Sue and Carol came to visit the other week and we watched Weekend in the Country together, and agreed that although there's a lot to enjoy in the episode, which offers loads of pretty visuals, food for thought and scope for the imagination, it is let down by certain weaknesses and contrivances.

Okay, I'm on my hols from work for a glorious fortnight (or possibly not so glorious, depending on the weather), and since I have all this time on my hands, I decided it was time for another Pros review.

A Pros drabble. Well, almost a drabble. Well, a drabble and a bit, then. Someone over at Prosfanfic wondered why a pair of highly trained CI5 agents would be sent to collect a desk - reward or punishment - and between that and an ongoing discussion about ways of writing dialogue without resorting to 'he said', this scene suggested itself to me. This is what happened right before The Acorn Syndrome.

Once upon a dream and way back in the dim and distant mists of time, I used to write reams about The Professionals, watching and reviewing each episode in turn. Being a bit on the fandom fickle side, however, and because there just aren't enough hours in a day or days in a week to devote to all the shows I love, the Pros reviews started to fall by the wayside after a while and eventually dried up altogether. But I've always meant to get back to them, eventually, picking up where I left off. I've tried a couple of times, but seem to have some kind of mental block where The Acorn Syndrome is concerned. I don't know what it is about this episode, I watch it, enjoy it, start writing about it, but somehow tail off about halfway through and never pick it up again. Time to break through that block, methinks, try to stave off a bit of my guilt over letting the project drop. So here goes.

For my Pros-y friends, just because. It's been an eternity since this journal last saw any Pros content.

So,

Review of The Acorn Syndrome is coming soon. If I say it out loud, I might actually finish writing it this time...;-)

All right, so this post is for the Pros people on my list, if they care. Because Birgit (not [livejournal.com profile] birggitt but Prosfanfic Birgit) and Sue have both asked recently. And because it's been forever since I did one of these for Pros and I've felt guilty for neglecting it. And because my Number One Currently Airing Show (three guesses) has been on hiatus (until this Friday, so this just snuck in under the wire) and instead of indulging in the recap-free time I am a glutton for punishment. For all these reasons, and for Prosfanfic, here's a Pros recap.

It's been ages and ages since I did one of these, an episode recap for The Professionals. I started this one months ago, literally, and feel very guilty that it has taken so long to get back to finishing it. Never mind. Better late than never. This one is all kinds of fun.
